How Many Pallets Fit in a Van?

How Many Pallets Fit in a Van?

The number of pallets that fit in a van depends on the vehicle size, pallet dimensions, pallet height, total weight and loading access. A small van may carry one small pallet, while a Luton van may carry up to 6 pallets depending on size and weight.

For business courier work, pallet capacity is not only about floor space. Payload, loading method, pallet height and whether the goods are stackable all affect which vehicle is suitable.

Dippo Lills provides UK courier and transport support for pallet deliveries, business stock, warehouse collections, Luton vans, curtain-side vehicles and 7.5T transport.

Common Pallet Sizes

The two most common pallet sizes are UK standard pallets and Euro pallets.

A UK standard pallet is usually around 1200mm x 1000mm.

A Euro pallet is usually around 1200mm x 800mm.

Pallet height and weight can vary a lot. This means two pallets with the same footprint may still need different vehicles if one is taller, heavier or not stackable.

Quick Pallet Capacity Guide

Vehicle Typical pallet capacity Best for
Small Van Up to 1 pallet Small pallet or light goods
Medium Van Up to 2 pallets Small pallet loads and boxed goods
Large / XLWB Van Up to 4 pallets Longer items and light palletised goods
Luton Van Box Up to 6 pallets Pallets, bulky goods and business stock
Luton Curtain-Side Up to 6 pallets Side loading and forklift access
7.5T Vehicle Up to 10 pallets Larger pallet loads and heavier freight

These are approximate guide figures. Final suitability depends on pallet size, height, weight, loading access and vehicle payload.

Small Van Pallet Capacity

A small van may carry up to 1 pallet, depending on the pallet size and weight.

Typical guide:

  • Typical load: 1 pallet or small boxed items
  • Approx. load space: 1.5m L × 1.0m W × 1.1m H
  • Approx. payload: up to 500kg
  • Loading access: rear / side loading

A small van is best for lighter palletised goods, documents, parcels and small boxed items. It is not suitable for tall, heavy or awkward pallets.

Medium Van Pallet Capacity

A medium van may carry up to 2 pallets, depending on the vehicle and pallet size.

Typical guide:

  • Typical load: up to 2 pallets or medium-sized items
  • Approx. load space: 2.4m L × 1.25m W × 1.4m H
  • Approx. payload: up to 800kg
  • Loading access: rear / side loading

A medium van is useful when the goods need more space than a small van but do not require a large van or Luton.

Large / XLWB Van Pallet Capacity

A large or XLWB van may carry up to 4 pallets, depending on pallet size, height and weight.

Typical guide:

  • Typical load: up to 4 pallets or bulky items
  • Approx. load space: 4.2m L × 1.27m W × 1.85m H
  • Approx. payload: up to 1000kg
  • Loading access: rear / side loading

An XLWB van is useful for longer items, boxed goods and lighter palletised loads. However, width and height are more limited than a Luton van.

Luton Van Pallet Capacity

A Luton van may carry up to 6 pallets, depending on pallet size, height, weight and loading access.

Typical guide:

  • Typical load: up to 6 pallets or large boxed items
  • Approx. load space: 4.0m L × 2.0m W × 2.0m H
  • Approx. payload: up to 1000kg
  • Tail-lift: up to 500kg where available
  • Loading access: rear loading / tail-lift option

A Luton van is often better than an XLWB van when pallets are bulky, taller or need more width.

Luton Curtain-Side Pallet Capacity

A Luton curtain-side vehicle may also carry up to 6 pallets, depending on load size and weight.

The main advantage is side loading.

This is useful when:

  • Forklift loading is required
  • Pallets are difficult to load through rear doors
  • Warehouse collection needs side access
  • Goods are wide or awkward
  • Pallets are being loaded from a yard or loading bay

If the collection site has forklift access, a curtain-side vehicle can make loading easier and faster.

7.5T Vehicle Pallet Capacity

A 7.5T vehicle can usually carry larger pallet loads than a van or Luton.

Typical guide:

  • Typical load: up to 10 pallets or larger commercial loads
  • Approx. load space: 6.0m L × 2.4m W × 2.4m H
  • Approx. payload: usually around 2500kg
  • Loading access: rear loading / tail-lift option

A 7.5T vehicle is suitable when the goods are too heavy, too large or too high-volume for a Luton van.

Why Pallet Weight Matters

Pallet capacity is not just about how many pallets physically fit inside the vehicle.

Weight is just as important.

A van may have enough floor space for several pallets, but if the pallets are too heavy, the vehicle may exceed its safe payload. This can make the vehicle unsuitable even if the pallets physically fit.

Always provide the real pallet weight before booking.

Why Pallet Height Matters

Pallet height can also affect vehicle choice.

A pallet may fit on the floor but be too tall for a small, medium or XLWB van. A Luton van provides more height, but even then, very tall pallets may need checking before booking.

If the goods are stackable, more can sometimes be carried. If the goods are not stackable, the courier must plan based on floor space only.

Loading Access for Pallets

Pallet deliveries need suitable loading access.

Tell the courier if:

  • Forklift is available at collection
  • Forklift is available at delivery
  • Tail-lift is required
  • Pump truck is required
  • Side loading is needed
  • Goods are on ground floor
  • Loading bay is available
  • The ground is flat and suitable
  • There are access restrictions

This helps confirm whether a van, Luton, curtain-side or 7.5T vehicle is the correct option.

Tail-Lift Pallet Delivery

A tail-lift can help load or unload pallets where there is no forklift available.

However, tail-lifts have weight limits. On smaller Luton vehicles, the tail-lift may be suitable for loads up to around 500kg depending on the vehicle supplied.

Heavy pallets may need forklift loading or a larger vehicle.

Never assume a tail-lift can handle every pallet. Always confirm pallet weight before booking.

Forklift Loading for Pallets

Forklift loading is often better for heavier pallets or multiple pallet loads.

Forklift loading may be needed when:

  • Pallets are heavy
  • Pallets are being loaded from a warehouse
  • Side loading is required
  • The load is above tail-lift capacity
  • Several pallets need loading quickly
  • The site has a loading bay or yard

For forklift loading, a curtain-side vehicle or 7.5T vehicle may be more suitable depending on the job.

How to Choose the Right Vehicle for Pallets

Choose the vehicle based on pallet size, weight and loading access.

A small van may work for one small, light pallet.

A medium van may work for small pallet loads or boxed goods.

An XLWB van may work for up to 4 light pallets or longer items.

A Luton van is better for bulky pallets, larger boxes and tail-lift jobs.

A curtain-side vehicle is better for forklift side loading.

A 7.5T vehicle is better for larger or heavier pallet loads.

What Details Are Needed for a Pallet Quote?

To get an accurate pallet delivery quote, provide:

  • Collection address
  • Delivery address

  • Pallet height
  • Pallet weight
  • Whether goods are stackable
